Installing roof valley protection

What’s included in valley gutter guard installation by 1300 LEAF GUARD?

  • A complete clean and sweeping out of the valley, prior to roof valley guard installation.
  • All materials and equipment involved in the installation process are included in the initial quote.
  • For tiled roofs: 1000mm standard valley mesh width.
  • For corrugated roof valleys: 500mm standard valley mesh, plus 21 screws and 21 corro saddles for each metre of corrugated valley to bolt the mesh in place. (Corro Saddles are small metal plates shaped like a horse saddle, they help to hold the gutter mesh down snuggly on corrugated sheets).

What is a roof valley (valley gutter) and what are its specs?

A roof valley is a section of metal flashing, made wide enough to finish the joins of two separate sections of roofing.

The valley is supported from beneath by steel or wood to ensure sturdiness and durability. The typical valley width lies between 185mm to 210mm of the return rise to the centre fold. This means the overall valley width is generally 335mm to 385mm (allowing for distance lost because of the centre fold). The rounded return rise should be at least 10mm taller than the flat section, as it is the final barrier against backflow.

We recommend using the wider section of the valley sheet where possible — and don’t be afraid to ask for custom widths, if required.

Why install roof valley gutter guard?

Valley gutters are prone to the following common problems:
  • Greater volume of leaf debris and water flow during heavy rain (due to placement, slope, and design of valleys).
  • Leaves and other debris from roof valleys generally end up in gutters or rainheads below, often causing blockages.
  • If gutters or rainheads at the base of the valley are damaged, blocked, unprotected or simply not in good working condition, this combined with unprotected roof valleys can cause the water to pool in the valley and seep into the ceiling space.
The installation of a quality valley gutter guard, plus a tailored leaf gutter guard solution can prevent serious damage to your roof and home by combating the issues mentioned above.

Valley gutter guard FAQs

To help you in deciding whether roof valley gutter guards are right for your home, here are a few frequently asked questions from homeowners we’ve worked with.

We always recommend a full gutter guard solution that covers the entirety of the gutter system. Gutter systems are designed in a way to allow valley gutters, main gutters, downpipes, and other parts of the gutter system to work together. By simply protecting a single aspect of the whole system, you might not be getting the best possible results and may still be at risk of blockages and damage.

Generally, valley guard is a little more expensive than standard gutter guard, however, we’re happy to discuss your budget and potentially offer the same price per metre as our standard gutter guard. This is never a given, but we may be able to make it work – just call 1300 LEAFGUARD and ask us.

We offer our valley guard meshes in a full range of colours, so matching the guard to your roof and creating an aesthetically pleasing look shouldn’t be an issue. Note that if your house is subject to heritage overlay rules or if you want to keep exactly the same facade look, your valley gutter guard will be visible from the ground.

It’s generally a matter of removing small amounts of leaf litter by hand while wearing gloves for protection. If the valley is heavily blocked with thick leaf and debris build-up, we will tackle it with a broom and other small rake-like tools to fully clear and sweep the valley.
